On Friday, I received my Pfizer #2 shot on the SUNY Albany campus. I actually had an appointment for 9:30 am, and I left with enough time to arrive ten minutes early because I could not wait to get that shot. While I was on the highway, a sudden rain downpour started and stopped within about 90 seconds. Then, when I arrived on campus, the big ol’ sign announced that the vaccine site was closed due to weather. Dude, really? I had no idea that that was even a possibility. There were still plenty of national guard troops outside directing traffic in spite of what I figured must be a chance of lightning, and now they got to stand around in the rain dealing with cranky people.
I laboriously turned around (if you’ve been to that site you know that it’s not like you can just K-turn yourself out, what with one-ways and cones and signage and barriers). As I did, Alanis Morissette started singing on the radio, so I blasted the volume, rolled down the window, and belted out, “It’s like raaaaaaaain on your vaccine day!” very loudly as I started the 25-minute ride back home.
I headed back a couple of hours later–they’d said we could return anytime that day–and although the lines were a bit longer than usual, it all went smoothly and I even got a sticker. But, I’ve got to tell you, my body did not enjoy the process. I guess I can console myself that my immune system response is strong, because overnight I couldn’t even sleep because I was so cold and achy. By 3 or 4 in the morning, I was also super thirsty and hungry, so I was able to motivate myself out of bed long enough to wobble downstairs, get a protein bar, and lurch onto the couch smooshed into a cocoon of about five or six blankets. I didn’t even have the presence of mind to take any medication until Cute W came down for the morning and brought me juice and drugs. By mid-morning on Saturday I’d improved enough that it just felt like I had a really bad hangover, and I woke up this morning with a firm plan to spring back into my normal workout routine until I registered that I’m still off-kilter. I should be fine by tomorrow, though. And I am very excited for friendly gatherings and a haircut. So: hooray for a weekend of illness!

I’m really sorry you experienced those side effects, and I never would have dreamed that the place would close because of rain! But it will be so worth it. I got my first vaccine dose Friday afternoon, and I honestly can’t even remember what the weather was like at the time (this was at a CVS). It’s all a blur, due to my pandemic brain. But I too am excited for things like haircuts, which I will probably start doing two weeks post first vaccine, as new data says that provides 80% protection.

Okay, Claire, for #2, hydrate-hydrate-hydrate!!
