MIA

Y’all.

Y’aaaalllllll.

I know that I’ve been MIA, but I really haven’t been up for writing lately.

Part of it’s because my work has been busy, so that I am spending way more time typing at a computer than I’d like. Then, when I get free time, I don’t want to you spend it, you know, typing at a computer. But mostly it’s because when I write I think, and when I think, I’m anxious. So it is not currently one of my go-to leisure activities. I have cast aside my newsy podcasts in favor of silly romance audio books. And when I get a free moment for a little creativity, I do what Reese Witherspoon says and get out of my head and into my hands.

Some of that’s been embroidery. I just made this cute little necklace.

But I’ve been spending even more time doing watercolors. I am weirdly proud of some of last night’s work. While Cute W was off playing soccer, I attempted to copy some of the houseplants around the room.

I find it extremely absorbing and I don’t really think about much of anything except what I’m doing while I’m doing it. In fact, at this point, J’s room is fully taken over as a painting space.

This picture is from after I tossed away easily ten or twenty paintings that weren’t cute enough to stay out of the garbage. I’m still working my way through Lacey Walker‘s Learn to Watercolor book, but to make it last, I’ll often do the lesson (if any of these look like excellent drawings, they’re probably one of Lacey’s from the book), and then I’ll do a bunch of little extra mini paintings to practice whatever the particular latest lesson was about. I’m working through the book in order, and my most recent lesson was a painting of succulents, so then I was just doing other plant pictures.

Anyway, that’s some of what I’ve been doing. Instead of writing. I hope that you are finding things to do that bring you joy.
