For my birthday, we had a fancy date. First, we headed to Proctors to see Hadestown. This was a stroke of luck because I’m on the Proctors mailing list, and they had a flash sale, $30 tickets for a couple of different shows if you bought them on September 30th. When I saw that Hadestown was playing on my birthday, I decided that The Universe wanted me to see it. It was great, and it was a Sunday matinee, so we planned for an early-ish dinner afterwards.
We walked up the street to a fairly new restaurant, Milas Restaurant & Bar, which is fancy and special occasion-y. One of our favorite things is to try as many different dishes as possible, so we were very excited that the options included lots of mini-choices, like dips, flatbreads, and small plates. We tried a bunch of different dishes.
Here’s Octopus on the left and Grilled Cucumber on the right. The octopus piece is lounging on a few little cubes of tasty potatoes and a romesco sauce that I liked very much. I had never heard of grilling a cucumber, so we gave it a shot. It was good but not a favorite.
Here are Tirokroketes (Cheese Croquettes) on the left, which were rich and tasty and not too heavy, a hazard with cheese croquettes. On the right, it’s Flash Fried Calamari, and I hate to be super-basic, but this might have been my favorite dish. The calamari was excellent, the pureed caramelized artichoke sauce was fantastic, and I ate every last microgreen.
On a left is feta dip that I don’t see on the menu now — it was super tasty and would almost have tied for first place, but it was possibly a bit too salty, which is saying something, because I love some salt. I’d also totally go back and just drink wine and eat all the dips with bread all night and be super-happy about it. On the right, these are Manti, the beef short rib dumplings, which were tasty and rich.
It was a fantastic vibe and even though we basically opened the place, it was jam-packed quickly. I would definitely go again for a date or a fancy night out, and I love that there are now several great options that are just super-close to Proctors. For Cute W and me, I think we’d both pick The Nest and Milas over Johnny’s.

Happy Birthday! Glad you were able to have a fun night out. We too are trying to prioritize fun outings, to distract from current events. Trying to choose happy now rather than waiting four years. Easier said than done.

Ugh, yes, for sure.
