Free Summer Fun

Every year I am particularly proud of my big roundup of free summer fun, so I’m feeling a little silly that I haven’t shared this article until now. Tons of stuff is happening!

And I took a little bike ride today, and it was early and so lovely out that I thought I’d take some pictures of the new pool in Central Park that opened on Juneteenth. Honestly? My reaction when I first saw it was that it seemed awfully small, especially after that huge lake-style pool from Days of Yore. But I’m warming up to it now. Here are some pretty pictures:

Here’s the front complex

Here’s part of the main pool with a kiddie pool with fountain in front. Just to the left in the picture is the pool complex that you see above. Also: notice that in this part, they’ve got turf instead of grass. Actually, I don’t hate it. Think about how trashed that grass would be. And how all the sad little blades of grass would end up in the pool.

Here’s more of that same pool, but looking further to the right, so you can see that there’s a whole ‘nother section for lap swimming, making it a big L shape. Plus another building between this entire main pool and the spray park section.

And here’s the spray park! So now we’re on the other side of the building, and you can see a section of the spray park with the big L shaped pool behind it. If you look closely you can see that there’s actually a fountain spurting in this picture. It between those two rocks in the foreground, maybe about an inch below the lifeguard chair that’s toward the center of the image.

And finally, the rest of the spray park, plus some of the landscaping band picnic tables.

It all looks very pretty and peaceful at around 9 am. I’m sure it will be a mob scene around noon. I’m so glad that Central Park finally has a pool again.
