Me to 13-year-old M: “Hey, can you please add a sentence to that thank you note for the [gift you just received]?”
M: “Oh my gosh, Mom, I was just going to do that!!”
Me: “Okay, great. . .”
M: “I mean, it’s like you don’t trust me to do anything.”
Me: “I just wasn’t sure if you’d noticed the card there. ”
M: “What, right here? Right next to my backpack? Directly in front of me?”
Me: “Okay, thanks for doing that, then. You’re awesome,” I sing it out, all false cheer.
I walk away and into the kitchen. Minutes later, M calls out goodbye. She has left for school. The card remains unsigned.
